STRONG N.Z. DOWNS FIJI IN SCHOOL RUGBY TRI NATIONS OPENER
In a dominant performance New Zealand Schools defeated Fiji Schools by 54 to 7 in the opening Schools Tri-Nations Rugby series at Knox Grammar on Thursday 28th September.
Had the several NZ kickers been on target the score could have been 10 or so greater.
NZ had over 75% of the possession and territory and were able to convert this into points–in spite of a monumental defensive effort by the Fijians.
One the one occasion that the Fijians scored a good try, they showed good continuity of possession with the flair that we have come to expect of them.
On other occasions they inexplicably kicked away the little good possession they were getting, or had turnovers from ball passing errors.
If the Fijians get their act together in subsequent games, the evidence was there though that they could be a threat.
NZ looked good in every department–with quick passing and straight running they threatened every time they had the ball. They have some flyers out wide who will be a challenge in coming games.
The NZ forwards showed all of the efficiency at the breakdown and set pieces that we have come to expect and admire in NZ teams.
