FAMOUS 1977 TEAM TO HAVE REUNION

The undefeated 1977 Australian Schoolboys Team which played 17 games on a two month tour will have a reunion later this month.

The 27 players were led by Captain Tony Melrose who late played both Union and League for Australia. He is organising the reunion at Sawtell—which is about half way between Sydney and Brisbane for driving.

This team played a style of rugby which influenced Australian rugby for the next 15 years when the Wallabies won gram slam tour of the UK and the World Cup win  in 1991.

This was exemplified by the three Ella brothers, Gary , Mark and Glen –amongst many others in the team. The three Ella brothers each scored a try in their defeat of Welsh Schools at Cardiff Arms Park.

Legendary League player Wally Lewis was a member of this team, but was somewhat unlucky in dislocating his shoulder early in the tour.

Michael O’Connor, another joint Rugby and League star, now a Wallabies selector, was one of the stars of the tour.

Those who made the Wallabies include—

Tony D’Arcy, Gary Ella, Glen Ella, Mark Ella, Michael Hawker, Anthony Melrose, Shane Nightingale, Michael O’Connor, Dominic Vaughan, Chris Roche.
